All about Entering Japan & Japan Travel
Japan has been easing its border control policies in the last twelve months. This has allowed international students to come in starting from March 2022 and also made it possible for tourists to visit, provided they are part of a tour group.
However, with the reopening on October 11, travellers no longer have to be part of a tour group to enter Japan, and the number of foreign visitors will not be capped daily.
What are the new measures for the reopening?
Right now, Japan accepts all vaccines approved by the WHO. To be seen as fully vaccinated, visitors should have gotten three shots. If you are fully vaccinated, you do not need to take a test before you leave for Japan. If you have not been vaccinated, you must take a PCR test three days before you fly.
Japan has stopped testing people when they arrive unless they have COVID-19 symptoms. Instead, you should upload proof of your vaccination (the initial shots and the first extra shot) or a negative test result on Visit Japan Web, which we will explain more about.
What is Visit Japan Web?
Visit Japan Web is an online service that helps travellers fill out most of their entry forms before they get to Japan. It is divided into three parts: Quarantine (Fast-Track), Immigration, and Customs. When you finish each part, you get a QR code. These codes are scanned at the airport to speed up your entry process.
If you register ahead of time, you can use a special fast lane at the airport, making your arrival smoother and faster. That is why it is a good idea for all travellers who can use Visit Japan Web to do so.
What is the difference between the Visit Japan Web and MySOS app?
Let us talk about how Visit Japan Web is different from the MySOS app:
MySOS was the first version of what is now Visit Japan Web. If you were travelling in October 2022, you would have used MySOS for the Fast Track service. If you have already sent in your MySOS application, you can still use it to enter Japan until January 13, 2023.
However, starting November 1, 2022, if you’re applying for Fast Track, you must use Visit Japan Web. This new system is better because it includes both immigration and customs processes, making things easier for you. If you’ve signed up with MySOS before, you can sign up again with Visit Japan Web.
Remember, you should complete your Visit Japan Web registration at least 6 hours before you arrive in Japan. They process applications that are closer to the arrival time first. However, many people are applying, so getting your application in as early as possible is best.
Travelers are encouraged to use Visit Japan Web for hassle-free entry. It saves time at the airport and lets you start your Japan journey without delay. As of April 29, 2023, Japan is now open to travellers from all countries and regions and no longer requires a valid vaccination certificate or a COVID-19 negative test certificate for entry.
However, submitting your information online through Visit Japan Web before travelling for a smoother arrival experience is still recommended.
